FY2012 Fringe Benefit Rates

The University of Minnesota has reached an agreement on the FY12 fringe benefit rates with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), our cognizant Federal agency.  The future rates and the current rates are shown below:

FY12 Fringe Benefit Rates
Academic =36.0%
Civil Service = 41.3%
Graduate Assistant = 26.1%

FY11 Fringe Benefit Rates
Academic = 33.3%
Civil Service = 40.1%
Graduate Assistant = 24.2%

If needed, a breakdown by component can be found in the FY12 Budget Planning Guidelines http://www.budget.umn.edu/FY12docs/FY12_BudgetInstructions_AcademicUnits.pdf that is published by the University's Office of Budget and Finance

The FY12 fringe benefit rates will be effective on July 1, 2011.  They should be used in sponsored proposal budgets for work that will be conducted on or after July 1, 2011.  PIs and their staff are encouraged to use the new rates in their proposals immediately if the project will extend into the next fiscal year.  All proposals submitted to SPA on or after May 15, 2011, will be expected to incorporate the new rates.  EGMS will be updated shortly to reflect the new rates.
