Information Network (SPIN) is a computer database with detailed information
about thousands of federal, nonfederal, and international funding
opportunities. There is no charge to University of Minnesota faculty
and staff for using the system. SPIN requires users to have a University
of Minnesota IP address. Therefore, SPIN can easily be accessed from
campus computer systems; however, VPN must be installed and run on
remote systems to gain access. Information on VPN, its installation
and use, and software downloads can be found at http://www1.umn.edu/adcs/network/vpnoverview.html.
Users can perform interactive searches on the
SPIN database using any combination of the following fields: Keywords,
Applicant Types, Award Types, Geographical Restrictions, Sponsors,
Sponsor Types, Citizenship, Deadline Dates, and Text.
You may find it helpful to read the
SPIN help file before getting started.
In addition, users can create investigator profiles
and initiate e-mail funding alerts based on those profiles within
the system. Simply go to the GENIUS link to create your own profile.
Users can find a printable quick reference guide for SPIN
and GENIUS at http://www.infoed.org/spinquickref/quickcard2up.pdf.
In addition, you can view a presentation
on the use of SPIN and SMARTS/GENIUS below. You will need PowerPoint
97 installed on your computer in order to view the presentation.
To install PowerPoint 97, go to http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/9798/Ppview97.aspx.
To search SPIN, click
here and choose either SPIN or GENIUS
If you encounter difficulty connecting to the
SPIN database, please contact tmcclun@umn.edu
