Managing Sponsored Projects
UM SPA, January 2008

Chapter 1: Overview
Section 1.2: Education and Training
Principal investigators

Required:

To be eligible to be a PI, individuals must complete the core Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) curriculum, part 1 and part 2. Faculty members wrote the core curriculum and facilitate the workshops. It is currently organized into two workshops:

Part 1 addresses these ethical topics: social responsibility and reporting misconduct, and authorship, plagiarism and peer review (available in-person only)
Part 2 covers these ethical topics: conflict of interest, fiscal responsibilities, intellectual property, and research data management online workshops)

If PIs will use human subjects, animal subjects, or hazardous materials, or work with protected health information, they must also complete instruction on those specific topics.

There is also a continuing education requirement. PIs who start a sponsored project more than a year after they completed the core curriculum must review an information update (see http://www.research.umn.edu/first/contedu). In addition, once every three years, PIs must participate in an activity that involves discussion of responsible research, scholarship and professional ethics.

To learn more about the courses and see the schedules and register, go to the faculty education website: http://www.research.umn.edu/first/.
